Tasmanians ride 500km for mental health
Two inspiring Tasmanians have cycled 500 kilometres around the state over four-days to raise awareness for mental health care.
Richie Porte joined this year’s challenge and rode to honour the loss of his brother, Tom, thus shining a light on the urgent need for greater mental health support in Tasmania.
Local riders rallied behind the cause and many bravely opened up about their own mental health struggles.
Winter challenge co-founder Tim Harmsen said cyclists trekked from Stanley to Hobart.
“This year’s route saw us starting at 2am from Stanley in the State’s north west before skirting the edge of Burnie and heading into the rugged and wild west coast,” he said.
“We are aiming for a grand arrival at the Mawson Place Christmas Tree in Hobart.”
SPEAK Up! Stay ChatTY founder Mitch McPherson said the organisation was grateful for Tasmanians coming together to support the important work that it did.
“Coupling fundraising for charity with a tough physical challenge as a group, we hope will bring lifelong connections for this group, and we are rapt to have their support once again,” he said.
“This is the perfect environment to facilitate discussions around the importance of mental health and checking in with your friends and family, particularly around Christmas time.”
