Mamma Mia! a family affair

THE Tasmanian premiere of ‘Mamma Mia!’ is proving to be a West Hobart family affair, with two families of well-known theatre makers currently knee deep in preparations to stage one of the world’s most popular musicals.

Petr Divis, Mark Wojcik, Leiz Moore and Allan Jeffrey are long-time friends and co-producers for The Show Company Tasmania, which is staging the smash hit Mamma Mia! at Hobart’s Theatre Royal from 17 January to 1 February.

Mr Divis and Wojcik are the musical director and production manager for the show, while Ms Moore and Mr Jeffrey are the choreographer and director.

Working together through The Show Company, the two couples have been responsible for some of the biggest shows in Hobart in recent years, with their award-winning productions of ‘Wicked’ and ‘Mary Poppins’ attracting huge audiences and critical acclaim.

“West Hobart is a wonderful suburb for us to be based in,” Mr Wojcik said.

“It’s easy to access everything we need, which is ideal for the irregular and often late hours that come with staging theatre shows.”

The two couples live close to each other and they appreciate the relaxed, yet vibrant West Hobart lifestyle.

“It’s like being a close-knit family,” Ms Moore, who was Master of Ceremonies for Mr Divis and Wojcik’s wedding earlier this year, said.

“We love that we can easily pop into each other’s house and chat about out latest production.”

Mr Jeffrey said West Hobart had more than its fair share of theatre supporters, including theatre practitioners and people who simply loved to go to the theatre.

“We often get people chatting to us about our shows in the street or as we’re heading to the Hill Street Grocer, and there are many current and former cast members who live here,” he said.

Mr Divis said it was the local support they received that kept them going.

“We’re really looking forward to entertaining everyone in our community with the incredible music of ABBA,” he said.
