Young performers set to shine

A NEW drama program is set to challenge young primary school performers at Dominic College.

Dominic College Director of Creative Arts K-10 Mike O’Brien said the school’s senior students had established a tradition of excellence in performance for many years now.

This included the acclaimed performance of The Good Doctor, Stories From Suburban Road and In Their Own Words.

“Year six students have presented their own created shows ‘Say It Loud’ as well,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Now drama students from year three to six can extend their drama outside school hours in a new co-curricular program.”

Mr O’Brien said it was also a valuable opportunity for students to explore drama and performance in a non-threatening and inclusive activity-based environment.

“Drama is a great way to build skills in communication, problem-solve, build confidence and learn how to navigate group dynamics,” he said.

“The drama course will run for one semester (terms one and two) where the group will build skills.

“In terms three and four, the focus will shift to apply these skills in practice.

“Co-curricular drama will run for one-hour each week on Wednesdays after school in Dominic College’s historic Little Theatre.”

Dominic College principal Beth Gilligan said that both students and parents had expressed a desire to have an extension and enrichment opportunity for younger students who enjoyed drama and had a flair for it.

“Numbers will be deliberately kept small to intensify the experience,” she said.

The program will be conducted by Samantha Healey, one of the College’s experienced drama specialists who has worked locally and internationally.
