Top young Tassie surfers shred at Clifton Beach

THE 2016 Tasmanian Schools Surfing Championship was held at Clifton Beach earlier this month with honours shared by young Tasmanians from around the state.

The event was held in perfect conditions with head high swell, which was ideal for the 150 competitors ranging from beginners to state representatives.

St Michael’s Collegiate student Lizzie Stokely, 18, dominated the Under 19 Division 1 girls category, while the Under 16 Division 1 boys top surfer was Liam Viney from the north west coast.

Lizzie’s win followed her recent success in surfing Shipstern’s Bluff, where she made history as the youngest female ever to ride the notorious “monster waves”.

The junior state team will be selected from the Tasmanian Schools Surfing Championship results to represent Tasmania at the Australian School Surfing Titles, which will be held at Phillip Island, Victoria in November this year.
