Sirens call for new members

ARE you looking for a new and exciting way to increase your fitness in a fun and supportive environment? If the answer is yes, then roller derby may be for you.

South Island Sirens (SIS) Roller Derby League is inviting Hobart residents to try their hands at the sport.

SIS training sessions are held every Tuesday from 6-8pm at Woody’s Skate and Play at 10-12 Knoll Street, Glenorchy.

SIS member Mark Schuettpelz said anyone was welcome to attend a “fresh meat” training session and just “have a go.”

“The league is a not-for-profit organisation, skater-owned and managed with help from referees, non-skating officials, volunteers and other people who love the sport,” he said.

“This is my second year playing roller derby – and I absolutely love it.

“I’ve met so many different people from across the world who are just as passionate about this crazy and exciting game as I am.”

Mr Schuettpelz said all proceeds from bouts (games), fundraising and sponsorship go back into the league to fund development opportunities for skaters and to facilitate bouts with inter-state leagues.

The Sirens’ first public bout was held in June 2011 when they hosted the South West Sydney Rockets in front of a crowd of 900 fans.

From there, SIS continued to recruit new members and compete on a monthly basis and by the end of 2011, the club consisted of 50 members.

SIS hosts around six public bouts a year and also travels throughout the state and nationally to compete.

SIS currently has two home teams, Hell’s Belles and Maul Teasers, and a travel team, The Krakens.
