Me Wah Restaurant savours gold medal win

HOBART’S Me Wah Restaurant has been named Australia’s Best Chinese Restaurant at the 2016 Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence in Sydney, securing the award ahead of four other finalists from across the country.

The win follows Me Wah’s success at the VIC/TAS Awards for Excellence in August this year where it picked up the gong for Best Chinese Restaurant.

Last year, the Sandy Bay eatery secured the state and national title for Best Asian Restaurant.

Me Wah Restaurant sommelier Damien Byrne said the award was a “great honour” for the restaurant and its group of dedicated staff members.

“Winning the title of Australia’s Best Chinese Restaurant is a great example of the quality of Tasmania’s hospitality industry and our ability to compete on a national scale,” he said.

“Here at Me Wah, we take great pride in our high-quality service and selection of food and beverages, and this award is fantastic recognition for all our hard work.

“It shows that we are moving in the right direction and we will strive to continue to explore new products and deliver a more polished and refined service.”

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA) chief executive officer John Hart congratulated all of the winners who were judged best in the nation.

“Tonight is a celebration of the hard work of so many in our industry,” he said.

“I take my hat off to those who make this industry their livelihood and love what they do.

“It’s easy to underestimate the effort it takes to run a hospitality business.

“Sourcing great produce, mentoring staff, managing tight margins – it can be tough.

“It’s fantastic to be able to recognise local legends who show so much passion and dedication to their craft.”

Mr Hart said Me Wah Restaurant had been a “star performer” for decades.

“It proves you don’t always have to be the biggest operator to do amazing things. Just be consistent, cook from the heart, and the results speak for themselves,” he said.

Five hundred representatives of the nation’s best metropolitan and regional cafes, restaurants and caterers attended the awards to celebrate the achievement of those operators that provide great food, exceptional service and value for money across 37 categories.
