Little athletics season off with a bang

LITTLE athletes have hit the ground running for the launch of the 2016/17 Queenborough Little Athletics season.

The first meet was held on 8 October at the Domain Athletics Centre, where the club will be based for the start of the season due to ground works at Sandown Park in Sandy Bay.

Open to children from five to 16-years-of-age, Little Athletics is based on the sport of track and field with events specifically modified to suit the ages and abilities of children.

It includes a wide range of running, jumping, throwing and walking events.

Fourth year Queenborough under-10 athlete Travis Round said he was excited to be running at the Domain Athletics Centre.

“It will be great to run up on the track and improve on my times,” he said.

Queenborough Little Athletics president Darren Sheen said the club’s motto was “family, fun and fitness”, with an emphasis on “doing your best.”

“Children can join at any level of skill and fitness and many children find themselves making new friends and seeing an improvement in their confidence,” he said.

“For children who might want to, they can go on to compete in regional, state and national competitions.

“Parents who also want to be involved in the program are welcome to participate as voluntary helpers or officials, allowing them to share in many experiences with their children.”

With two of his own children competing in the sport, Mr Sheen said Little Athletics was a great activity for his kids to be involved in.

“My son prefers the running events, while my daughter enjoys the field events,” he said.

“There are lots of different events, so most children find at least one that they’re good at and that they enjoy.”

Queenborough recently ran two successful “come and try” events where new athletes and parents were provided with a sneak peek into what Little Athletics was all about in a relaxed atmosphere.

“The weekly competition at Queenborough provides fun through participation in an enjoyable sport with friends from the same age group,” Mr Sheen said.
