Little athletes gear up for new season

THE shoes are on and the laces are tied as little athletes from across the greater Hobart area gear up for the start of the 2018-19 Little Athletics season in October.

Queenborough Little Athletics Centre (QLAC) will be holding a “Come & Try” session at Sandown Park on Sunday 7 October from 10.30am.

This is a great opportunity for new athletes and parents to see what Little Athletics is about in a relaxed atmosphere.

Little Athletics is for all children aged five to 16 years and is based upon the sport of athletics (track and field).

The events are specially modified to suit the ages and abilities of children and includes a wide range of running, jumping, throwing and walking events.

The motto is “family, fun and fitness” with the emphasis on doing your best.

It is open to join with any level of skill or fitness.

For children who might want to, they can compete in regional, state and national competitions, and making new friends and improving confidence is an added bonus.

Travis Round first started Little Athletics in the under six age group and this season will be in under 12s.

Travis said he was very excited about returning to QLAC and building on the excellent results from last season.

“It will be great to continue to improve on my times in my favourite track events, the 200 metres and 400 metres,” he said.

Parents are involved in the program as voluntary helpers or officials and share in many experiences with the children.

QLAC president Darren Sheen has two children competing in Little Athletics and said it was a great sport for his kids to be involved in.

“My son prefers the running events, while my daughter enjoys the field events,” he said.

“There are lots of different events so most children find at least one that they’re good at and enjoy.”

The weekly competition at QLAC provides fun through participation in an enjoyable sport with friends in the same age group.

QLAC’s first official meet for the 2018-19 season will be held at Sandown Park on Saturday 13 October.
