TWO Hobart dining institutions have taken out top honours at the 2016 VIC/TAS Savour Australian Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence.
Me Wah Restaurant in Sandy Bay was named the Tasmanian Restaurant of the Year and Best Asian restaurant in Tasmania, while Mures Tasmania received the Best Tourism Restaurant and the Tasmanian Consumer Vote Award.
The two restaurants were joined by 550 Victorian and Tasmanian restaurateurs, caterers and cafes to celebrate the industry’s achievements, recognising those operators that provide great food, exceptional service and value for money.
Me Wah and Mures will now go on to represent Tasmania at the National Awards for Excellence held in Sydney on 24 October 2016.
Restaurant and Catering Australia (R&CA) chief executive officer John Hart congratulated all of the winners who were judged as the best in their category.
“The winners should be proud of their achievements,” he said.
“Running a restaurant is never easy – it takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get it right.”
Mr Hart said it was pleasing to recognise the ongoing achievements of Me Wah Restaurant, which had been an R&CA member for more than 15-years and continued to demonstrate excellence in all elements of food service.
“It is the dedication of operators like this that makes our industry truly great,” he said.
“Operators tell us consistency is the key to success. But it takes the right mix of food and enthusiastic staff for the experience to be memorable.”
The “People, Produce, Place” Tourism Award was awarded to Mures Tasmania, an institution, that Mr Hart said, had focused on fresh, quality seafood for generations.
“Fresh local seafood is a huge selling point for international tourists, with 39 per cent of travellers associating Australia with great seafood,” Mr Hart said.
“Mures definitely delivers on this front. It is easy to see why this state punches well above its weight when it comes to iconic food and wine experiences.”
Mures has also won the Consumer Vote Award, where customers nominate and vote for their favourite restaurant.
Mures owner Will Mure said he and his team were proud and honoured to be named as the recipients of the two awards and recognised by both their peers and customers.
“It is particularly gratifying, for myself and my wife Jude, to see all the hard work that the whole Mures Team has put into the business over the years, but particularly in the past 12 months,” he said.
“The past decade has seen amazing innovation in Tasmanian tourism and we, while keeping our traditions alive, have had to revitalise to keep pace.”
Mr Mure said he was delighted with what the company had achieved and it could not be possible without the people who worked there everyday.
The 2016 VIC/TAS Savour Australian Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence were announced at an awards ceremony held at the Melbourne Park Function centre on 15 August 2016.
