Healthy Hobart serves up its summer program

LARGE groups practising yoga, orienteering, petanque and children taking part in 45-minute weekly activity sessions.

It was a sight to behold last year as the City of Hobart’s free community-wide health and wellbeing initiative, ‘Healthy Hobart’, saw local community members, services and clubs come together and celebrate being active and healthy.

With more than 250 people attending the 2018 Spring Program, Yoga instructor Booke Banks encouraged people to come along this year and see was everyone was raving about.

“The yoga sessions are open to anyone of any age and no previous yoga experience is necessary,” she said.

“We see husbands and wives, mums and daughters, the young, the elderly and everything in between.

“St David’s Park is a really beautiful space and a great escape from the busy streets all around.

“It is a great way to de-stress after a day at work and we often get families from interstate or overseas walking past our classes praising the uniqueness of the program.

“We have some amazing individual stories from our participants including one lady who comes along with her dog each week (who also does his best to participate).”

Ms Banks also coordinates the Healthy Kids: Under 5’s sessions on Friday mornings, which will be held at Soldier’s Memorial Oval.

Kicking off the first session of the summer program in 2019 will be badminton on 3 February in South Hobart.

Southern Tasmanian Badminton Association development officer Donna Meaghan said she was looking forward to getting some people out on the court to understand why Badminton was the second most popular sport in the world behind soccer.

“The thing I love about badminton is how it brings people together,” she said.

“Just like other racquet sports, it is a great game for those looking for an enjoyable and social form of physical activity – or you can also push yourself a bit harder if you want that extra physical challenge.

“We see people from ages eight to 80 playing regularly and it’s hailed as one of the healthiest sports in the world.

“There are lots of opportunities to play at South Hobart with multiple rosters including Mixed Social rosters played annually, Public ‘Come and Play/Try’ sessions, Veterans and Masters competitions, ‘Super Smash’ for kids, a daytime Hobart ladies’ competition and Kids and Families sessions.

“It really is a perfect sport for Tassie.”

An initiative of Hobart City Council in partnership with Healthy Tasmania Pty Ltd., Healthy Hobart aims to get more people active more often by offering free activity programs open to everyone.
