Fighting crime made easy

Crime Stoppers’ new online reporting tool – available 24-hours a day, seven days a week – is letting Tasmanians play their part in solving crime anywhere in the state.

With most people having immediate access to the internet via their smartphone, the new online service is an anonymous and easy way for the community to assist Tasmania Police.

It also complements measures already undertaken as part of the State Government’s plans to improve community safety.

Crime Stoppers Tasmania chair Amanda Castray said the system was based on successful online reporting capabilities in other Australian states and territories.

“Since the introduction of online reporting in other jurisdictions, Crime Stoppers has reported a significant increase in usage and quality of reports and we expect this trend to be replicated in Tasmania,” she said.

“The web interface for reporting information about crime is interactive to assist the public in providing that valuable information.

“It’s well designed, effective and engaging.”

Speaking at the launch, Speaker of the House of Assembly and Liberal Member for Denison Elise Archer congratulated the organisation for its latest initiative.

“Crime Stoppers has been in Tasmania for more than 22-years and the State Government recognises the important role it plays in keeping our communities safe by allowing members of the public to anonymously report suspicious activity,” she said.
