Confirming your income for Family Tax Benefit purposes

IF you get Family Tax Benefit (FTB), we ask that you and your partner confirm your family income with us each year.

This is so we can balance your FTB payments and make sure we’re paying you the correct amount.

You have 12 months from the end of a financial year to confirm your family income.

If you don’t do this, we may ask you to pay back the full amount of FTB you got.

We’ve started sending Account Payable Notices for the 2016-17 financial year.

If you got one, it’s because you haven’t confirmed your income details for the financial year.

There’s still time to avoid a debt. All you need to do is confirm your income.

To do this you can:

Lodge your 2016-17 tax return with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Tell us you don’t need to lodge a tax return through your Express Plus Centrelink mobile app, or your Centrelink online account through myGov.

Even if you only got FTB for part of the 2016-17 financial year, you still need to tell us about your income.

If you have a partner, they’ll need to confirm their income too.

If you’ve lodged your tax return, you don’t need to do anything else. We’ll get the information we need from the ATO once they process your return.

If you don’t confirm your income, your FTB payments will stop in November.

We won’t be able to pay you again until you confirm your income with us, or pay the debt back in full.

You can always talk to us if you’re worried about paying back a debt.

We’ll work with you to manage it and set up a repayment plan that works for you.
