Breathe new life into well-loved classics

By Susannah Slatter*

IF your Facebook feed is anything like mine, the past few months have been filled with fashionistas flaunting their very best “frocktober” outfits in the name of raising funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

For me the inspiration was two-fold – firstly, to donate to a great cause and secondly, to scrutinise my own wardrobe, with the aim of stretching it to its full summer potential.

After sorting through all the shift, slip and shirt-dresses I own, here are my top tips for making the most of what you already own this season:

Consider colour

Casual dresses in light, natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and silk are perfect candidates for dying a more festive shade. Forget “what’s hot” right now and choose a colour you love.

You can even mix different shades of dye to create a truly unique number that is perfect for sunny, boho-inspired weekends.

Customise your cut

If your style runs more towards tailored lines, classic cuts can be updated with some simple alterations.

Shortening hems on A-line dresses can provide a more summery feel – you could even go asymmetrical or turn them into high-low dresses.

Or you could add a touch of elegance to more flowing, whimsical styles by nipping them in at the waist.

If you want to go even further, try transforming your dresses entirely into skirts.

If you have wrap, halter, maxi or even glamorous formal frocks that do not fit as well around the bust as they do around the hips, a quick nip and tuck (of the dress) can give you a brand-new outfit.

I find this is an excellent solution for well-worn little black dresses that I just cannot bear to part with.

Borrow from the boyfriend

Then there is my favourite technique – raiding my partner’s wardrobe and his collection of rarely worn shirts.

Teamed with a belt, flats and sunglasses, incorporating a men’s shirt into your outfit is a chic and understated way to extend your summer wardrobe.
