A wish come true

WHEN young Spencer Logan, of West Hobart, had his wish to ride in a hot air balloon granted last year, it had a profound impact on both him and his whole family.

Thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation, Spencer and his family travelled to the Yarra Valley for a balloon ride – a trip that Spencer’s mum, Karelle, described as “a zeeply emotional experience, mixed with a super-exciting adventure.”

“When Spencer falls in love with something, he falls hard,” she said.

“When he was six, Spencer loved learning colours so we taught him the colours of the rainbow, so of course he fell in love with rainbows.

“When he was eight he spotted a rainbow-coloured hot air balloon book and after I told him that you could ride in hot air balloons, he talked about going for a ride in one every day for the next year.”

Make A Wish grants the wishes of children aged three to 18-years who are battling life-threatening illnesses.

Spencer suffers from Cardio-Facio-Cutaneous.

He spent the first two years of his life in chronic pain and the first five undergoing numerous tests and multiple surgeries.

His high care needs have had an impact on the whole family.

“The whole Make a Wish experience gave us an incredible insight into Spencer’s character as a person and made us realise he can do more when he has more adventures and experiences,” Ms Logan said.

“Having the beautiful, kind and lovely Make A Wish volunteers in our home getting to know us and Spencer was a very special part of the experience.

“It was incredibly humbling to have the generosity of everyday people making Spencer’s wish possible.

“But, most of all, having people care so much about Spencer’s life and the extremely rare condition he lives with will be something we will remember forever.”

Make a Wish Hobart’s Gala Ball ‘A Night with the Stars’ raises much needed funds for young people with life-threatening illnesses and helped make Spencer’s dream a reality.

All funds raised from the event go directly to granting healing wishes for young Tasmanians.

There are currently 19 wishes commenced through the Hobart Branch that requires support.

A Night with the Stars will be held on Saturday 5 May at Wrest Point Casino and entry fee includes a three course dinner and drinks.

Tickets are $175 and are available from bit.ly/2Bjm9DJ or at mawhobart@gmail.com.
