CHRISTMAS fun has traditionally started every year with the Myer Hobart Christmas Pageant, which will be held this year on Saturday 18 November.
The pageant starts in Liverpool Street outside the Tasmania Police building at 10.30am, heading down Liverpool and Harrington Streets, before coming back up Collins Street.
But this year, another special event is set to take place the night before.
From 7pm-9pm at Mawson Place, there will be a family celebration for the turning on of the new Christmas tree lights.
There will be choirs, children’s entertainment and snacks being sold to raise money for Variety.
The lights will be turned on at around 8.30pm.
Just around the corner, the Hobart Council Centre Christmas story will also be on display for the first time.
The native animal characters, which delighted children last year on street-side decorations, are back with a very Tasmanian Christmas story.
Another first this year is the community Christmas Carols by Candlelight.
Seven community groups are putting on carols in Hobart, Lenah Valley, Mount Stuart, New Town and West Hobart between 3 and 17 December.
