Hobart’s first aid heroes

HOBART parents and caregivers can now truly be their children’s hero.

Registered training organisation Tiny Hearts First Aid is bringing its paediatric first aid courses to Hobart in October, with the goal of empowering parents and caregivers with the knowledge and skill of first aid.

The fully accredited courses are run by paramedics and nurses, and aim to educate parents in the most common first aid emergencies faced by parents.

These topics range from CPR and choking to allergic reactions and drowning.

Advanced life support paramedic and chief executive officer of Tiny Hearts, Nikki Jurcutz, said the lack of community first aid knowledge she was exposed to as a paramedic prompted her to reach out to her sister, Rachael Waia, to deliver the training.

“Time and time again I would arrive at jobs where infants and child first aid could have lessened the impact of an incident, or even more worryingly, saved a life,” she said.

The pair said they hoped that through these courses they could foster proactive members of the community who were not afraid to act in an emergency.

Tiny Hearts public courses will be launching in Hobart on 16 October 2016.
