SOUTHERN councils have partnered with Sustainable Living Tasmania to offer cheaper insulation and LED downlight replacement throughout November as part of the Home Energy Bulk Buy.
Buying in bulk brings down the cost per item and products chosen for the buy will be based on quality, price and performance.
Throughout November, local residents will have the chance to save money with a more than 25 per cent discount on Earthwool ceiling and Bradford floor insulation and LED downlights.
Sustainable Living Tasmania’s executive officer Todd Houstein said one of the best ways to cut down on energy bills and increase comfort was to ensure good ceiling and under floor insulation.
“In terms of comfort levels, ceiling insulation helps you all year round,” he said.
“In winter, it prevents warmth from escaping as quickly, which keeps you warmer for longer and means your heaters don’t need to work as hard, saving energy, greenhouse gases and money.
“In summer, heat cannot penetrate the home as quickly, which keeps you cooler.
“Most Tasmanian homes have no floor insulation and some ceiling insulation, but not enough. Topping it up can make a huge difference.
“Homes with old halogen downlights have big gaps in their insulation around each light fitting.
“This can be solved by replacing them with new IC-F rated LED downlights.
“Because they are so much more efficient, they don’t heat up nearly as much, so insulation can be placed directly over them.”
The biggest of its kind, the Home Energy Bulk Buy will also offer homeowners solar PV panels, battery systems and efficient hot water systems in the following months.
