LOCAL rising chef’s Emily Hanson, 21, and Samuel Peart, 20, have achieved national recognition by taking home silver in Australia’s longest running culinary competition.
The top Tasmanian chefs turned up the heat at the 2017 Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Award national finals, battling it out at Fine Food Australia in front of a record-breaking crowd.
They took home three silver medals for their entrée, main and dessert courses.
Ms Hanson, who works as a chef at Wrest Point, and Mr Peart, from FICO Bar and Restaurant, produced a standout dessert course of caramelised white chocolate cremeux with lemon sponge, roasted walnut white chocolate coconut soil, orange rhubarb curd, coconut mousse and cinnamon coral tuile.
The duo said they were proud to represent Tasmania at the event.
“Participating in this competition is such a great opportunity to expand our network and grow as a chef in the industry,” Ms Hanson said.
”The competition is hard, tough and stressful – it has so many mixed emotions, but it is so worth it.”
Ms Hanson said they were “absolutely ecstatic” to be recognised with three silver medals.
“To come out with a medal is incredible, but to come out with three silvers, we would never have expected that. I could not be happier,” she said.
From here, Ms Hanson aims to further her training as a pastry chef and receive her full qualifications.
“We are so proud of Emily and Sam, not only for their outstanding achievement, but the professional manner in which they represented Tasmania,” Wrest Point general manager Dominic Baker said.
“These two quality hospitality professionals are great role models for young people wanting to enter our fantastic industry.”
The Nestle Golden Hat Awards are the oldest continuous running chef’s competition in Australia, with this year’s competition running over three-days in Sydney.
The competition is recognised globally by the World Chefs Association and four international judges oversee the proceedings and award medals accordingly.
